Another day another iOS v/s rest survey

Twenty percent of Apple’s iPhone customers over the past year were switching from an Android phone, but only 7% of Samsung buyers had previously owned an iPhone, according to a new study... Or among buyers who switched brands, Apple took three times as many from Samsung (33%) as Samsung took from Apple (11%).

Another day and another survey to compare Mobile users from July 2012 to July 2013. This report has some key findings.

  1. Apple retains more customers than any other Mobile Operating system
  2. Three the number of people move from Samsung to Apple than from Apple to Samsung
  3. Apple attracts previous Blackberry users while Samsung snatches other Android users
  4. More previous 'dumb-phone' users and first time mobile users choose Samsung over Apple

While none of these points new findings, most of the previous Blackberry users choosing iOS over Android goes to show that Blackberry users prefer quality over quantity (in terms of feature sets in iOS and Android). Also combining the points 1, 2 and 4 above the logical conclusion is that, 'a new smartphone user' (includes previous dumb-phone users and brand new users) is more likely to choose Samsung's Android phone over Apple's iPhone, but he/she is more likely to switch to Apple's iPhone and is more likely to stay with the iPhone thereafter. This is really good news for Apple, as I have repeatedly stressed the point that customer satisfaction and retention is what Apple is famous for and is the reason they have been so successful. The rumored low cost iPhone 5C might be Apple's tool to garner more interest from the 'new smartphone user'. It will be interesting to redo the same survey one year from now after the introduction of iPhone 5C.

A new smartphone user is more likely to choose Samsung’s Android phone over Apple’s iPhone, but he/she is more likely to switch to Apple’s iPhone and is more likely to stay with the iPhone thereafter.

The second part of the report goes on to talk about the demographics of different Mobile OS users and again states the well known facts, that the iPhone users are younger, more educated and earn more than the Samsung Android users.
