Apple Maps and drones

Apple maps has improved hugely in the last few years. But Apple still lags Google on the Maps front, mostly of no fault of their own except that they were into the game too late. But as far as the end user is concerned that cannot be an excuse and Apple needs to something to catch up to Google soon, in this area. And that something is apparently un-manned drones flying around the roads and streets instead of what Google did, i.e. have real People drive around in real cars.

Apple wants to fly drones around to do things like examine street signs, track changes to roads and monitor if areas are under construction, the person said. The data collected would be sent to Apple teams that rapidly update the Maps app to provide fresh information to users, the person added.

If this whole idea of drones seems far fetched, read along this article on Bloomberg which has some meaty details on this including FAA grants that Apple has acquired to operate drones and acquisitions that Apple completed recently that might possibly be connected to this topic, etc. Generally if there is this so much smoke, there ought to be some fire burning somewhere!

Apple filed for an exemption on Sept. 21, 2015, from the Federal Aviation Administration to fly drones for commercial purposes... FAA granted Apple approval to “operate an unmanned aircraft system to conduct data collection, photography, and videography,” according to one of the documents.
